Ionotropic glutamate receptors are ligand-gated ion channels which are activated by the neurotransmitter glutamate. Ionotropic glutamate receptors can be divided into 4 subgroups (NMDA, AMPA, kainate and delta receptors), based on their pharmacology and sequence similarity. Ionotropic glutamate receptors mediate excitatory synaptic transmission throughout the CNS and are involved in the synaptic plasticity of learning and memory.
